PDMAs directed to undertake measurers to avoid rain losses

Islamabad—The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Thursday directed Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) for taking all possible precautionary measures to avoid losses in the ongoing pre-monsoon spell after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast more than 20 percent extra downpour this year.
The authority alerted all the departments concerned to get ready for all kind of situations so that losses to lives and property could be avoided during the pre-monsoon season. “All rescue and relief agencies, departments are required to be sensitized to remain ready to respond on a short notice,” NDMA said in a letter written to all the concerned.
The authority, in the letter, asked PDMA Punjab, PDMA Sindh, PDMA Balochistan, PDMA Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, SDMA Azad Jammu and Kashmir, GBDMA Gilgit-Baltistan, and FATA FDMA for adopting preventive measures in the current rain spell. According to a spokesman of PMD, the pre-monsoon rain was expected over upper parts of the country during next 24 hours.
He said that the monsoon currents were penetrating in upper Punjab and Kashmir, while a fresh westerly wave was also likely to approach upper parts of the country in next 24 hours.
Besides, rain is expected at scattered places in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat and Islamabad during the period. Whereas, Isolated heavy falls are also expected in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala divisions and Islamabad on Thursday night. The spokesman further informed that two good rains of pre-monsoon were likely to occur in the coming week.
Meanwhile, it is reported that death toll reported on Wednesday windstorm and rains that lashed different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have reached to eight while over 100 sustained injuries on Thursday. Roofs of many houses, other buildings, walls, signboards, power pylons and trees were fallen due to windstorm in Peshawar, Mardan, Bannu, Nowshera, Charsadda, Malakand, Dir, Swat, Khyber Agency and Mohmand Agency, reported a private news channel.
According to Rescue 1122 sources, two people including a child were killed in Peshawar, two women and a child lost their lives in Mardan, while one person was killed and 50 injured in Nowshera. Emergency was imposed in the hospitals of windstorm affected districts. A camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Frontier Region (FR) was also damaged in the windstorm. Two displaced children lost their lives when roof of a house collapsed in Bannu Township.
The Bannu Health Department said over 50 injured were brought to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Hospital after the windstorm. Another person received injuries when wall of a house collapsed in Safi area of Mohmand Agency. Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) said that 600 feeders have been damaged in the windstorm in different parts of KP.—APP
