Pak-India cricket

Following the recent news of India facing Pakistan in the group stage of the Asia Cup 2018 on September 19 in Dubai, arrived the development of Imran Khan’s stupendous electoral success. Indo-Pak matches are nothing but a pleasure and a treat for all true cricket admirers irrespective of their nationality. And personally indeed I feel nostalgic on the mention of Pakistan team and cricket in Pakistan as I got introduced to the great game through the 1982 Test series between India and Pakistan in latter’s backyard.
Though India had lost the series by 3-0; I simply got awestruck by the all rounder skills and leadership of Imran Khan. Following that series I also turned out to be an ardent admirer of Imran just like billions. How can we forget cricket bonhomie between the two neighbours while hosting the 1987 and 1996 World Cup jointly? Or that joint Indo-Pak team playing as a single unit in an unofficial match in Colombo to express solidarity with the island nation when Australia and West Indies boycotted their 1996 World Cup matches in Sri Lanka following a bomb blast? Or Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s invitation to his counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani to view the 2011 World Cup semifinal between the two nations live at Mohali? Or Eden Garden’s standing ovation to Asif Iqbal to bid him farewell from cricket in 1980?
Skipper Imran Khan led Pakistan to World Cup win in 1992 when the team was in an “impossible” situation that bears testimony to his impeccable personality. As a cricket lover, I expect that as the leader of the nation also, Imran Khan will do the “impossible” of ensuring international cricket full-fledged on Pakistan soil and rekindling those sweet anecdotes and pleasant history revolving Indo-Pak cricketing ties (of course with equal reciprocation from all quarters).
