Operation launched against toxic liquor sellers, makers

Hyderabad—Sindh Excise Minister Gianchand Essrani Wednesday said a prov-ince-wide operation had been launched against the sellers and manufacturers of toxic liquor. Addressing a press conference here, the minister said a high level inquiry was initiated into some 40 liquor deaths in Tando Muhammad Khan.
The minister said the crackdown against the sellers of toxic liquor would be carried out jointly by the police and Excise Department. He expressed grief over the deaths in Tand Muhammad Khan district and announced Rs 200,000 compensation to family members of each deceased.
“It’s very sad that the Holi festival has started but many Hindu families are performing the burial rites of their loved ones,” he said. Majority of the persons, who died of liquor, he said, were Muslims.
The minister said he would soon hold a consultative meeting with legislators, bureaucrats and civil society representatives to discuss amendments in the existing law with the objective to increase punishment.—APP
