Observance of International Days

INTERNATIONAL Days on different themes and subjects are observed and celebrated every now and then throughout the calendar year in Pakistan as well as around the world by holding functions, seminars and symposiums to highlight the importance and significance of these days. International Breast Cancer Awareness Day was observed in Lahore and different organizations and health institutions arranged functions to mark observance of the day.
In this regard, a grand dissemination seminar was held in the premises of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center to mark observance of the day. Well-known international woman cricketer of Pakistan Sana Mir, was the chief guest on the occasion as she is also the ambassador for the hospital ‘s breast cancer awareness campaign. Hundreds of students from women colleges and universities as well as working women from corporate sector actively participated in the event.
Associate Director of Shaukat Khanum Memoril Cancer Hospital and Research Centre Naila Khan welcomed the guests and highlighted the importance and need for spreading awareness about breast cancer. Consultant Radition Oncology Dr Mazhar Ali Shah, Consultant Medical Oncology Dr Umme Kalsoom, Consultant Surgical Oncology Dr Amina Khan, Consultant Surgical Oncology Dr Zulqarnain Chauidhry and Senior Consultant Medical Oncology Dr Neelam Siddiqui held question answer sessions and also spoke on various topics of crucial importance.
The seminar concluded with thanksgiving address by the SKMCH*RC Chief Medical Officer Dr Muhammad Aasim Younf. He asked the audience members to share their learning with every next woman they meet and as such contribute to the great cause of the hospital in saving as many lives as possible. And, International Day for Rural Women has also been observed on Sunday in Pakistan as well as around the globe. Different organizations have organized discussions and workshops to celebrate the day in a befitting manner.
Kaarvan Crafts Foundation, based in Lahore and striving for crafting livelihoods, has organized discussion programme and workshops involving different educational institutions including Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Beaconhouse National University, Kinnaird University for Women, Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD), Faiz Ghar and Kaarvan Livestock Training Centre Kasur to celebrate the day. Kaarvan Crafts Foundation , according to its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Danish Jabbar Khan, is a no profit organization and also a hub of innovation, passion and humility, it provides training to women in rural areas of Pakistan in order to build their confidence to participate in local decision-making and craving connections with relevant urban markets, is working towards collective movement for a culture of peace from a gender perspective enhancing relational capacities through skills development pertaining not only to profession but also communication, critical thinking and conflict transformation turning problems into opportunities. Women Judges Conference
Second Punjab Women Judges Conference was held here in a local hotel recently. The three day conference was organized by the Punjab Judicial Academy under the guidance of Justice Ayesha A.Malik and was inagaurated by Chief Justice of Lahore High Court Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah. It was attended by President International Association of Women , Justice of the Supreme Court of Entre Rios Argentina Susana Medina, retired judge from the Court of Appeal of Tanzania Justice Eusebla Munnuo, Judge Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Ann Walsh Bradley, President of the Court of Sousse Tunisia ,Hunan Rights Education Director Anne Tierney Goldstein, former Supreme Court Judge of South Australia Dr Robyn Layton, women judges from all over the Punjab, Khyber Pukhtoonkhwah among host of others.
Nusrat Fateh Ali birthday
The 60th birthday of world renowned Pakistani Qawwal, singer and music composer from Faisalabad Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was celebrated recently not only in Pakistan but in different countries around the world as well. Functions including cake cutting ceremonies were organized in different parts of the country including his birth place Faisalabad, where he was born on October 13, 1948 (then Lyallpur) and TV channels and radio stations telecast and broadcast special programmes. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a regular visitor and performer at Lahore Radio Station and PTV Lahore Centre.
Punjab University turns 135
The oldest seat of learning in Pakistan Punjab University has turned 135 on October 14, 2017 as this scribe is writing this diary. Dr. Zaffar Mueen Nasar is the 44th Vice-Chancellor while the Punjab Governor is ex-officio Chancellor of this great seat of learning. More about PU next week, please.
