And now Speedo Bus

CHIEF Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif has launched a modern and comfortable public bus service – known as Speedo Bus – for people of Multan. Initially, 100 buses are to ply on eleven routes of the city and as per announcement of the CM at the inaugural ceremony, the facility would be expanded to cover other areas of South Punjab.
Commuters especially those in major urban cities of the country have been facing extreme difficulties because of rapid population growth, putting pressure on roads causing traffic congestion and prolong road blockades mainly due to VIP movement, illegal encroachments etc. The problem has been there for decades but none of the governments took any worthwhile initiative except to make hollow promises. However, Mian Shahbaz Sharif made a difference by launching a state-of-the-art transport system, called Metro Bus, in Lahore, followed by similar projects in cities of Rawalpindi-Islamabad and Multan that have contributed a lot to ease traffic congestion, provide decent travelling facilities to people at nominal/affordable fare and save precious time of employees, workers, students and businessmen. The choice of Multan for launching of Speedo Bus Service is important, as it will provide a fine travelling experience to people of a region that remained long neglected in developmental activities. However, now focus of development seems to be on Southern Punjab as the Chief Minister announced launching of a 24 billion rupee-clean drinking water programme for the area which would also go a long way in tackling water borne diseases. Similarly, numerous health programmes have also been initiated in South Punjab besides creation and upgradation of road network in the region which would help transform entire landscape of the area. The work that the present government has undertaken in South Punjab is much more than the one carried out during premiership of Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, who hailed from the same region but could not take effective steps to ameliorate the lot of the common man there. Focus of PML (N) government on South Punjab would surely pay back politically as well because it would deprive its opponents of the propaganda campaign that the focus was only confined to Central Punjab.
