National Skills University

NATIONAL Assembly Standing Committee on Education and Professional Trainings on Thursday passed a bill aimed at establishing the country’s first ever National Skills University in the Federal Capital. According to details, National Institute of Science and Technical Education (NISTE) will be converted into a full-fledged university after the passage of bill in Parliament. While welcoming the step, we hope that such universities will also be established at provincial level in order reap maximum benefit from the country’s youth.
Given the low rate of technical education when compared with regional countries such as India and Bangladesh, we consider the establishment of the University will give the much needed impetus to technical and vocational training in the country, enabling our youth which constitute about sixty percent of the population, to stand on their own feet and earn livelihood without looking towards government jobs. There is no denying the fact that equipping the youth with different skills is need of the hour not only to exploit their full potential but also create economic activities. We understand that some good work has been done under the present regime in this regard. Especially NAVTCC has come into life under the guidance of Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema. Recently it has prepared a plan to be executed from the next month to train one hundred thousand youth in 116 trades under the PM’s Youth Skill Development Programme. These are positive indicators and we expect that federal and provincial governments will continue to give requisite attention to technical training of the youth as marke- oriented skills will help the youth gain employment not only in the local market but also in international market particularly the Gulf States where there is now greater demand for skilled workforce. Our youth is very talented and if provided with right kind of opportunities they can excel in any field and turn into a real and productive asset for the nation.
