Karachi—An accountability court here directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to file ‘reference’ against Sindh Higher Education Commission chairman and former Federal Minister For Petroleum Dr Asim Hussain by 26 February.
NAB filed inquiry report in the court alleging that Dr. Asim Hussain had caused losses worth Rs450 billion to national exchequer.
The Accountability Court adjourned hearing of corruption reference against former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain until March 5 on Monday. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials presented the inquiry report on corruption and other allegations against Dr Asim in accountability court. The court handed over Dr Asim in NAB custody till 5th March while accepting the NAB request. The Court has directed NAB to submit reference against Dr Asim on next hearing.
NAB officials presented the alleged culprit before court in tight security along with his mother and sister.The accountability court judge inquired from NAB why a reference had not been filed against Dr Hussain even after so many months following the former minister’s arrest.
The investigation officer said that the NAB should be given three days time for filing a supplementary reference.
Counsel for Dr Hussain said there was no justification to keep his client in custody if the reference was not filed.
However, the judge accepted the NAB plea and sent Dr Asim to jail on NAB remand until March 5, seeking a copy of the reference at the next hearing.
The court directed the accountability authority to file reference until February 26.
Counsel for the defendant stated that his client’s surgery is being delayed despite court’s orders. He said that medical board had recommended surgical treatment of his client. The court, turning to the investigation officer stated that report of the medical board has not been filed.
