NA to elect new Speaker, Deputy Speaker thru secret ballot today

As the 15th National Assembly came into being on Monday with the oath taking of newly elected members, the house will now elect it new speaker and deputy speaker for the next five years term. The election will be held through secret ballot. Firstly, the elections for the office of the speaker will be held which will be followed by polling for the office of the deputy speaker.
Asad Qaiser of PTI and Khursheed Shah, the joint candidate of the opposition are in the race for the coveted seat of the speaker whilst for the deputy speaker office, the contest is between Qasim Suri of PTI and Asad Mehmood of the opposition. The candidates had time by 12.00 noon till Tuesday to submit their nomination papers before the National Assembly’s secretary. The contesting candidates can withdraw their nomination papers before the commencement of elections.
After the elections for two seats, the new speaker will also announce schedule for the election of the leader of the house. As the PTI has accused the opposition of horse trading before the elections, the party has reengaged with the allied parties to ensure victory in the elections. A delegation of PTI headed by its candidate for speaker Asad Qaiser met with the leaders of Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) on Tuesday. The GDA assured full support to the PTI for the elections of the speaker, deputy speaker and the leader of the house.
Later talking to the media persons, Fehmida Mirza, former speaker and leader of GDA was actually appreciative of the PTI for nominating candidates for the two slots from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. She said such steps will help address grievances of smaller provinces. She said together we will make a strong federation.
