NA echoes people’s sentiments on BD hangings

AS JI leader Motiur Rehman was hanged by the Government of Bangladesh for his ‘sin’ to support the cause of united Pakistan in 1971, there was strong reaction to this policy of personal vendetta not only in the length and breadth of Bangladesh but also Pakistan. Thousands of people attended his funeral and participated in protests held to condemn the move.
The international community is convinced that the charges levelled against JI leaders in Bangladesh were fabricated and the trial was nothing but sham attempt to hoodwink international public opinion. People of Pakistan were convinced that the leadership of JI is being persecuted and victimized just because they spoke for Pakistan during the turbulence phase of 1971. The feelings of people of Pakistan were echoed in a strong resolution adopted by the National Assembly, which condemned the execution of Nizami and termed the act a violation of human rights and against norms of justice. During discussions, members representing different political parties demanded of the Government to take up the issue at international level and summon BD envoy to register a strong protest. We also appreciate the just and firm stand taken by Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan whose efforts seem to be bearing fruit as the Prime Minister has asked Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior to formulate a response and policy in close consultations with PM Secretariat. BD is trying to shield the process of victimization by describing it as its internal affair but violation of human rights cannot go unnoticed in the 21st century. We hope that just minded members of the international community would also raise their voice against these gross violations of human rights and elimination of political opponents through judicial machinations.
