Mufti Abdul Qavi arrested in connection with Qandeel Baloch murder case

MULTAN Police personnel on Wednesday arrested Mufti Abdul Qavi hours after he escaped from the session court during hearing of Qandeel Baloch murder case.

Superintendent in Police Cantt (SP) Dr Fahad told that Mufti Qavi was taken into custody while travelling to Jhang near Muzaffargarh. He said that the religious cleric has been shifted to undisclosed location for interrogation.

Earlier today, Chaudhry Ameer Muhammad Khan heard the matter during which Mufti Qavi fled the scene for dismissing his bail plea and decided to approach high court in this regard.

On Tuesday, Qavi’s lawyer requested the court to adjourn the hearing till Wednesday as he had to prepare for his arguments in the case.

Main suspects in the case Waseem and Haq Nawaz were also produced before the court. Police requested the court to reject Mufti Abdul Qavi’s bail for completion of challan and additional investigation.

While expressing trust over the court in getting justice, Qavi said that he has no connection with the murder. He said that he will accept whatever the decision will be announced by the court.

Model Qandeel Baloch, who shot to fame for her provocative selfies, was strangled in July last year by her brother Muhammad Waseem. He said she had brought shame on the family and confessed to his crime in a press conference after his arrest.

Qandeel was social media sensation who also posed for selfies with Mufti Abdul Qavi in an incident that saw him swiftly rebuked by the religious affairs ministry.

Her murder reignited calls for action against so-called “honour killings”, in which a victim is killed by a close relative — who could subsequently be pardoned by another family member under Pakistan law.

In October parliament passed a law aimed at removing the ability to forgive “honour” killers. But critics contend some loopholes still exist
