With ever-growing population, cities and towns in Punjab province are fast running out of space for the graveyards and people have been clamouring here and there from time to time for some space for burial of their near and dear ones.
Chief Minister’s Special Monitoring Unit for Law and Order was seized of this important human problem and deliberating on all pros and cons over this issue fore more that a year. It has come out with the idea of developing model graveyards in the cities and towns of the province in a phased manner where all facilities will be available and the people will not have to run around with the bodies of their expired dear ones for some suitable space for their burial.
As a matter of fact, according to reports in the media, model graveyards are already under-construction in Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad and Sargodha where adequate land was available. Proposal of Special Monitoring Unit, which has been deliberating problems of the people and coming up with some remedial measures, for effective, proper and satisfactory implementation of the whole idea has now proposed setting up Shehr-e-Khamoshan Authority which has since been approved by the steering committee set up by the Chief Minister in this regard and the somewhat novel and commendable authority will be established at the earliest after legislation is done.
The authority will have various wings particularly one, which will secure its property against any encroachment in every model graveyard wherever these are constructed and developed according to the needs of the respective city depending upon the availability of land. Model graveyards will be constructed in close cooperation and coordination with the local government representatives.
