Many detained, joint resistance protest foiled

Geelani, Mirwaiz home-confined, Malik jailed

Srinagar

Several pro-freedom leaders and activists were detained on Tuesday when they held a protest against the plight of inmates in jails on the call of joint resistance.
The pro-freedom activists held a sit-in protest at Basant Bagh locality and addressed protesters regarding the plight of Kashmiris in prison.
“The condition of inmates languishing in various jails and police stations is deplorable.
Thousands of Kashmiris are facing oppression in jails. Slapping PSAs on those arrested, and torturing and humiliating inmates and prolonging their incarceration has become the order of the day,” the speakers at the gathering said.
“Despite many tall claims, so-called rulers only know to suppress people’s voices,” the protesters said. The joint resistance is led by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chief Muhammad Yasin Malik.
As the protest was being held, the police arrived and laid a siege around the area of Maisuma and Gawkadal. Several persons were detained and taken to police station.
The resistance leadership had called for a peaceful protest sit-in and a seminar on the plight of Kashmiri inmates in jails at Maisuma today.—KR
