Mani’s appointment

EHSAN Mani replaced Najam Sethi as Chairman of PCB as he was elected unopposed for three years on Tuesday. Talking to the media after election, Mani hinted at bringing changes in the country’s first class cricket making it more qualitative, admitting very rightly that this is only possible if best players are picked to compete in selected teams.
Ehsan Mani has served International Cricket Council (ICC) in different capacities in the past for almost 15 years. He also served as the ICC President from 2003 to 2006. Given his vast experience, we are confident that his appointment as the head of PCB will augur well for the future of cricket in the country. Indeed over the last few years, the green shirts have performed much better against top teams but without bringing consistency, it will be difficult for them to rank themselves in the top teams of the world. And consistency will come when the domestic cricket infrastructure is improved and strengthened. We should have sufficient quality players in reserve so that any player showing lacklustre performance in the national team should easily be replaced.
One of the major challenges for the new Chairman PCB will be to take steps towards revival of international cricket in the country. Importance should be given to PCB affairs as world’s one of the top sportsman is holding the seat of the chief executive, one expects that PM Imran Khan will also take bold steps for the revival of other sports. The pathetic performance of our hockey team, squash team and athletes in the Asian Games is sufficient to highlight where we stand today. There was a time when Pakistan used to claim much better positions in Olympic and Asian games than India but this time around our ranking in the Asian Games was below even some of the smaller countries. Our hockey team also returned without any medal. It is time to give serious consideration to this collapse. Structural changes need to be brought into the sports federations and boards with the appointment of honest and competent people. Then different sports should be promoted at the school and college level and the best talent should be provided training as per contemporary requirements so that our players could also perform better and clinch medals at the international levels. This is also important to build international image of the country.
