Mamnoon-Xi productive interaction

PRESIDENT Mamnoon Hussain and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping had a very productive and meaningful interaction on the sidelines of SCO summit in Tashkent on Thursday. The two leaders exchanged views on important bilateral matters besides issues of regional and global significance of mutual interest and there was, as usual, commonality of views between the two time-tested friends.
It augurs well that apart from matters pertaining to SCO, the two leaders also discussed important issues of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), membership of Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG) and South China Sea tension which is being engineered by the United States as part of its strategy to squeeze Beijing in the backdrop of its growing military and economic muscles. As conspiracies are being hatched by some vested interests and some regional and global powers against CPEC, it was heartening to note that the two leaders reaffirmed their resolve not to make any compromise on the gigantic project and translate it into reality as per schedule. President Mamnoon Hussain’s declaration that Pakistan would start work on establishment of selected industrial zones along the routes of the CPEC this year is a testimony that Pakistan is committed to pursue the project despite various odds as it has the potential to transform entire socio-economic landscape of the entire country. The most important aspect of the meeting was reiteration of Chinese position by President Xi that there should be criteria based approach to the membership of the NSG and Beijing proved this by blocking Indian bid at Seoul to get a lateral entry through American blessings. President Mamnoon also did well by reiterating Pakistan’s support to China on the issue of South China Sea and also those involving Taiwan and Tibet besides telling his counterpart that there was no place in Pakistan for enemies of China. We are sure that the two countries would continue interaction at different levels to take the bilateral relationship to new heights.
