LHC issues notices to CS Punjab, Secy Environment

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday issued notices to chief secretary Punjab, secretary environment and summoned deputy commissioner Gujranwala for not taking action against industrial units established in residential areas of city.
Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh passed the orders on a petition filed by a lung cancer patient.
During the hearing, petitioner’s counsel Advocate Sheraz Zaka submitted Gujranwala city was becoming one of the most polluted cities in the country due to rising levels of smog.
Sheraz Zaka argued that every year rising level of smog in Gujranwala endanger the lives of common citizens and it’s spillover effects were witnessed in other cities.
He argued that petitioner was a lung cancer patient and was seriously affected by the commercial activities of leather,stainless steel units established in residential areas without proper environmental impact assessment and no objection certificate.
At this, the court observed that the entire Punjab was adversely affected by the smog including Lahore and Gujranwala. Subsequently, the court issued notices to the respondents for October 24, while adjourning the hearing.—APP
