LHC acquits 1 death row, 2 life-term convicts

Lahore—Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday acquitted a death-row and two life-term convicts, sentenced for allegedly kiling a constable. A division bench, headed by Justice Shahbaz Ali Rizvi, passed the order on the appeals, filed by death-row convict Sarfraz and life-term convicts—Muhammad Akhtar and Muhammad Shahid—against their conviction.
During the hearing, the convicts’ counsel, Chaudhry Usman Naseem Advocate, submitted that a Sheikhupura trial court sentenced the accused for their alleged involvement in the murder of Constable Ali Ahmad Virk, despite lack of evidence. He contended that the incident took place at night and no eyewitness of the incident was available.
However, the trial court awarded sentence to the convicts, he added. He pleaded with the court to set aside the sentence and acquit the convicts. However, the prosecution opposed the request submitting that the trial court awarded the sentence on merit and witnesses gave statements against the convicts during the trial. The bench, after hearing detailed arguments, acquitted the convicts.—APP
