Lahore—The Association for Development of Local Governance (ADLG) has been established to promote cause of local government institutions in the country. This association works as the regional office of the South Asian countries organization, United Cities and Local Government and to provides assistance to working of the local government department of Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhotan and Bangladesh which will be an honour for Pakistan. This was stated by Director Local Councils Association of Punjab, Anwar Hussain while performing launching ceremony of Association for Development of Local Governance (ADLG) here.
ADLG is the alliance of four provincial local councils associations of the four provinces, Balochistan, KP, Sindh and Punjab. The ceremony was attended among other by the members of the boards of governors of all four provincial associations as well as the past and present elected representatives of local governments, media and civil society representatives.
The speakers at the launching ceremony called upon government to give all the powers of political, administrative and financial to the local government institutions under the article 140-A or Constitution of Pakistan. They also stressed that the government must recognize local government institutions as the third tiers of government so that the democratic process could be strengthen on strong footing.
It was also pointed out that the local government elections in Punjab & Sindh have not yet been completed which is causing distrust and unrest amongst the elected councillors. The participant demanded that local government must be recognized as the third tier of the government. The Heads of the renowned local government organization from 9 countries of the world addressed the audience through video link.
