Lahore to be made encroachment-free: Mayor

Lord Mayor Lahore Metropolitan Corporation (LMC) Colonel (R) Mubashir Javaid Malik has said that work to make the Lahore free of encroachments and a model of cleanliness is in progress on emergency basis. “ Restoring beauty and grandeur of Lahore, improve education standards of schools, provide maximum sporting facilities to the youth, improve city traffic and promote discourse were his priorities,” he said during an interview here on Sunday. To a query, the Lord Mayor said encroachments had disfigured city’s historic look and added to the traffic hazards besides causing losses to the city’s revenue, he responded.
About filtration plants, he said filtration plants provide temporary refuge from polluted water while the government was planning to install a water purification plant on the BRB to ensure pure water supply to the people of the provicial capital. About effectees of encroachment drive, the Lord Mayor said the road-side vendors might be registered with a number plate against certain fee and allowed to operate inside the mohallas without being static, adding that this would generate revenue for the MCL as well as provide livelihood to the effected road-side vendors.
