KTH takes lead in administering Avastin injection service

Peshawar—Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) has taken lead in administering Avastin injection service to the patients whose eyes affected due to diabetes as Diabetic Retinopathy is the common cause of blindness in working age population, said, Professor Dr. Mustafa Iqbal, In-charge Eye ‘A’ Unit KTH.
Prof. Mustafa Iqbal renowned Vitro-Retinal expert in KP started the first Avastin injection service in Eye A Unit of KTH. The patients are properly assessed on dedicated days by very competent staff before the drug is administered, he told APP.
He further informed that the average cost to patient in KTH is approximately Rs1200-1500 whereas in private sector the same injection cost from Rs 6000 to Rs 20000.
Approximately 900 patients per year are injected with Avastin drug in Eye A Unit KTH. No other Hospital besides KTH can claim of providing such a service, he told when asked.
Professor Dr. Mustafa Iqbal said, for the last 35 years Laser therapy has been the mainstay of treating sight threatening complications of Diabetic Retinopathy.
In the last five years there has been a paradigm shift in the management of Diabetic Retinopathy with the advent of anti VEGF drugs. One of these drugs Ranibizumab was made available for use in treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy in UK in 2013 but unfortunately is very expensive and beyond the reach of most patients in Pakistan, he explained.—APP
