KPT’s business dev plan being prepared

Minister for Ports and Shipping Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo on Friday informed the Senate that 10 years business development plan was being prepared for the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) to achieve international standards, efficiency and productivity.
In a written reply, the minister said that the volume of cargo handled by Karachi Port Trust (KPT) for period July 2016 to December 2016 was 25.8 million tons. He said that the volume of cargo handled by Port Qasim Authority (PQA) for the period July 2016 to December 2016 was 17.64 million tons.
He said that to improve the overall conditions and trade a deep water container port has been established. It has a capacity to handle 3.1 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEUs) containers including transshipment containers. He said that LNG and coal terminals were being developed at PQA on BoT basis to increase handling capacity while Railway infrastructure was being improved to enhance evacuation at the port.
He said that to deepen the sea near ports, dredging was done by the port authorities. Each port has its own mechanism and different requirements for dredging, he added. He said that hydrographic surveys were conducted to determine depth of sea for dredging purpose.—APP
