City Mayor Wasim Akhtar said that the four major sports complexes run by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) in the city would be upgraded to facilitate full participation of young people in sports activities.
He said facilities of international standards would be provided in the Sport Complex of Kashmir Road, Women Sports Complex Gulshan-i-Iqbal, People’s Sports Complex Lyari and Landhi Sports Complex.
The mayor expressed these views while visiting the newly-constructed Landhi Sports Complex. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, Korangi DMC Chairman Nayyar Raza, vice-chairman Ahmed Ali and other KMC officials were also present on the occasion.
He said sports were neglected in the past as there were no playgrounds and sports complexes in the city.
The mayor said the construction work on Landhi Sports Complex had been lingering on for a long time. He said he had directed the officials concerned to complete the work within one month and open the facility for people.
He recalled that Karachi produced a number of internationally acclaimed sportsmen, but sports activities came to a halt due to lack of facilities in the city.
The mayor said Landhi Sports Complex could not become functional despite the expenditure of millions of rupees as there was no professional staff to run the facility.He said facilities of international standards would be provided in the Sport Complex of Kashmir Road, Women Sports Complex Gulshan-i-Iqbal, People’s Sports Complex Lyari and Landhi Sports Complex.
He said the complex would have facilities of indoor and outdoor games such as squash, badminton, table tennis, snooker, karate, fitness, swimming, lawn tennis, volleyball, basketball and shooting range.
