King Mohammad begins 4-country African tour

Rabat—King Mohammed VI of Morocco begins visit to Rwanda, Tanzania, Ethiopia first tour of the Moroccan monarch to East Africa. The tour comes within the strategy designed by King Mohammed VI in recent years, which aims to diversify its partnerships, strengthen its ties with the most important players on the African continent.
The visit comes three months after Morocco announced its intention to return to the African Union.
“Our friends have long been asking us to return among them so that Morocco may take its natural place within its institutional family. That time has now come,” the King said in a letter to the 27th summit of the African Union held in Kigali, Rwanda, in July.

The corporate elites that are traveling with the monarch are set to propose strengthening ties with the growing and modernizing Moroccan economy, in hopes to consolidate bilateral political relations.
Moroccan businesses have yet to penetrate Rwandan markets, even though the sub-Saharan country has seen an average economic growth rate of eight percent over the past 15 years.
A closed meeting held between Rwandan President Paul Kagame and several members of Morocco’s private sector paved the way for the improvement of economic cooperation between the two countries.
The official visit of King Mohammed VI to Rwanda marks the prelude to a new era in the friendly relations between Rabat and Kigali, Rwandan Foreign minister Louise Mushikiwabo said Wednesday.
Rwanda and Morocco have decided to implement their friendship and cooperation through a series of activities, she said, citing the signing Wednesday in Kigali of twenty agreements and cooperation conventions covering several fields with high added value.
Morocco and Rwanda had decided to give new impetus to their cooperation during the visit of President Kagame to Morocco in June, and “the current Royal visit represents a leap forward”,
Mushikiwabo also emphasized the role and the place of Morocco in the African continent, noting that the Kingdom and Rwanda are set to strengthen unity within Africa to enable it accelerate its progress towards greater economic and social development.—Email
