Justice Saqib Nisar earns respect

ON receipt of letter from government for constitution of commission on Panama disclosures, the acting Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar said his powers are limited and decision in this regard would be made by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali on his return from Turkey.
In our view, the careful response of Saqib Nisar on this sensitive matter is inline with the coveted and senior position he is holding in the judiciary and therefore should not surprise anybody. In fact, the issue of Panama disclosures is not an ordinary matter as it has whipped a storm and uproar in the national politics and it was on the persistent demand of political parties that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif again had to address the nation to announce that he has written letter to the CJ to form a commission for investigation. Given the wide scope entrusted to the commission including investigation into offshore holdings of all Pakistani citizens besides unmasking those who are involved in other corrupt practices it was wise of Saqib Nisar that he gave a guarded response to the media after taking oath as the acting CJ, who in fact is a non controversial figure and during his stint at the Lahore High Court from 1998 to 2010 and then now in the apex court, has awarded merit based judgments that earned him respect not only in the legal circles but the public at large. With presence of judges like Saqib Nisar in the apex court, one may say confidently that an independent judiciary would continue its stride towards providing speedy justice to the people. As regards the investigation on Panama leaks, we are sure that response and action of Chief Justice of Pakistan would also be well calculated as being the senior most judge he understands all the intricacies of the issue.
