Lynching of Mardan student
Taking strong exception to the killing of a student of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan by students under the allegations of blasphemy, the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtun-khwa Pervez Khattak on Friday said that the lynching incident at the university in Mardan was highly condemnable and the provincial government would conduct judicial inquiry into the incident adding that those responsible for the gory incident would be brought to books.
Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, it may be recalled, was closed for indefinite period after the killing of a student of Journalism department Mashaal Khan and serious injuries to around half a dozen others by hundreds of charged students in campus on Thursday for allegedly publishing blasphemous content online and promoting “Ahmadi” Faith.
“Investigations have been launched into killing of a journalism student, Mashaal Khan, in Mardan University. Citizens cannot take the law into their own hands, adding that this is a sensitive and important matter. Police has registered two separate cases against 20 suspects and arrested eight suspects over the incident”. KP Chief Minister said while talking to Media at his chamber in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly Friday afternoon.
He said it was height of brutality as the mobile records and other investigations found the victim Marshaal innocent adding the attackers might have settled their score with the victim under the cover of blasphemy. He said the entire incident happened within 10 to 15 minutes
“I spoke to the Inspector-General last night and this morning as well. He is sending a report. When the report is prepared, we plan on launching a judicial inquiry because this is a very important and sensitive matter,” he told reporters. Khattak said the police are not allowed inside the gates of the university, and that they arrived after they were called by the varsity administration.
.The initial report prepared by KP police revealed that three students, not one, were tortured in the incident; however, the extreme mob torture claimed life of Mashaal Khan.
According to police sources, injured Abdullah is in police custody; however, the wounded Zubair is unaccounted adding both the friends of Mashaal Khan are in stable condition. The report said Mashaal Khan was killed after proper planning, as students organized a meeting before attacking Mashaal.
No evidences regarding blasphemy by the deceased have so far been found, the report mentioned. FIR filed against the lynching names 20 people including three university employees. Three police teams have been formed to make more arrests of people involved in the incident.
