In occupied Kashmir, High Court has quashed detention of seven persons including a minor and a 78-year-old man booked under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA).
A bench of Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar quashed the detention of a minor, Muzaffar Ahmad Sheikh, son of Abdul Majeed of Sangrama Sopore after his counsel, Tariq Ahmad Lone, produced the school-leaving certificate attesting the age of Muzaffar Ahmad Sheikh as 16 years. Observing that a minor cannot be booked under PSA, the court quashed the detention.
The court also quashed PSA detention of Nazir Ahmad Mantoo of Kanihama village of Shopian district following the argument by Mantoo’s counsel, Junaid Ahmad that the former was booked under PSA on August 17, 2016 for a period of six months and his detention was extended after three months by another order of the authorities.
Justice Rabstan quashed the PSA detention of five persons after hearing them through their counsels Wajid Haseeb, Mir Shafaqat Hussan, G N Shaheen and Nasir Qadri.
Disposing of a petition, the court of Justice Rabstan directed the authorities to release Muhammad Yousuf Sheikh (78), son of late Muhammad Maqbool of Iqbal Nagar, Sopore.—KMS
