A Delhi-based human rights group, Peoples Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR), has condemned the slapping of draconian law, Public Safety Act (PSA), 36th time on senior APHC leader, Masarrat Aalam Butt.
The PUDR in a statement in New Delhi said, “The revolving-door-detention, where a person is booked under new detention order illegally irrespective of the earlier order being quashed by the High Court is a feature of Jammu and Kashmir.” It sought immediate quashing of the PSA against Masarrat Aalam Butt and holding Indian police liable for contempt of court.
Instead of setting him free, the police released and then re-arrested him claiming he was wanted in a case registered in 2015 in Kupwara and as a result was taken to Handwara.
Since 1989, when the Kashmiris intensified their freedom movement, Masarrat Aalam Butt has spent more than 20 years in detention. He was first detained under Public Security Act on October 2, 1990.—KMS
