Investment opportunities for Overseas Pakistanis

SINCE the improvement of law and order situation in the country, one could see the eagerness by the expatriate Pakistanis to invest in the real estate sector as they are finding this flourishing sector as the best bet for investing their capital.
This is a welcome development but given the potential and the vast capital the overseas Pakistanis possess, there is a dire need to lure them into other sectors of economy as well which will not only generate economic activity but also create job opportunities. Talking to the delegation of overseas Pakistan in Lahore on Sunday, the Commissioner, Overseas Pakistanis Commission Punjab, Afzaal Bhatti highlighted the investment opportunities existing in the Province for expatriates in the fields of energy, agriculture, livestock and diary development and industries. We endorse the idea of the Commissioner and one can hope that the overseas Pakistanis, which are serving as a real asset for the country by sending their valuable remittances expected to touch mark of $ 19 billion this year, will be encouraged to initiate new ventures in the country. In fact, the setting up of Overseas Pakistani Commission Punjab itself is a revolutionary step on the part of the Provincial government to empower the expatriate Pakistanis which since its inception has played a pivotal role in addressing their problems and complaints. Provincial government has also worked towards attracting foreign investment by signing agreements with different countries particularly China and Turkey in different sectors. Indeed, these steps will go a long way in rapid progress of the Province and we expect, other Provinces will also follow the suit. As regards attracting investment from our own expatriates is concerned, it is imperative that road shows are conducted abroad especially Middle Eastern and European countries to sensitize them about the opportunities existing in the country. A good number of overseas Pakistanis are better placed and with the right kind of incentive package and facilities coupled with the security guarantees, they could be enticed to invest in Pakistan. Our Chambers of Commerce should also gear up efforts in this regard and explore opportunities for joint ventures with the expatriates.
