Islamabad —Justice (Retd) Mr Ali Nawaz Chohan, Chairman National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) has said that the Institution of Mohtasib was essential for growth of democracy and protection of fundamental rights of citizens of a country.
He was addressing the Advisors and officers of the Wafaqi Mohtasib at Wafaqi Mohtasib Secretariat here today. Emphasising the role of Mohtasib he said that the Institution of Mohtasib had powers to intervene in matters, for providing relief to the ordinary citizens, where the formal courts would not interfere for want of jurisdiction. He commended the performance of the Wafaqi Mohtasib in resolving public grievances and said that the institution under the leadership of M. Salman Faruqui has taken forward the ideals of the Wafaqi Mohtasib by spreading its operations to the far flung areas for providing relief to ordinary citizens at their doorsteps.
The Institution he said, reflected great passion for service to the ordinary citizens, without which such progress was not feasible. He appreciated the role of the Wafaqi Mohtasib in improving the jail environment, specially in relation to women and child inmates. He added that as Commission on Human Rights they were also concerned about jail environment and said that the Ombudsman role in the matter was providing inspiration to the Commission.
Justice Chohan informed the advisors about the important initiatives of the National Commission for Human Rights in pursuit of its objectives for protecting fundamental rights of citizens. He said that the National Commission was taking cognizance of human rights violations of Pakistanis, both within and outside the country. In this connection he referred to the Commission’s initiative in FATA and Thar. Regarding FATA he said that the Commission was looking into rights issues, while respecting the customs and traditions of the area.
