Inquiry committee starts probe into Gadani tragedy

Islamabad—Inquiry committee, constituted by Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Friday started probe into the Gadani incident, which claimed around 18 precious lives.
The committee, headed by Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain and comprising Secretaries of the Cabinet, Defence Production and Ports & Shipping, Chief Secretary Balochistan, Additional Secretary Defence and Managing Director Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works, visited Karachi and Gadani Shipyards.
The committee was given a briefing about the incident in its maiden meeting held at the Mehran Base Karachi, a press release issued here said.
The committee, which has the mandate to determine cause of the incident and fix responsibility, would submit its report within 15 days. Meanwhile, it is reported that Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Senator Hasil Khan Bizenjo Friday visited the under treatment workers, injured in Gadani ship fire incident. The minister went to Burns Ward of Civil Hospital, Karachi and inquired about the health of the injured workers and assured that government will provide assistance and support to the victims.
He said safety measures will be ensured to avoid such incidents in future at the ship-breaking yard. The minister also asked the hospital management to provide quality treatment to the injured workers.
