Karachi—While hell-like inferno engulfed three major factories of Karachi Friday, gutting huge stocks of medicine, tyres etc, it also exposed the limitations of the city administration in dealing with crisis situations.
The Hawkes Bay fire in a medicine factory and that in SITE area, was luckily extinguished after three to four hours, but the one at the tyre factory in Gulbai area, kept raging for over 8 hours, showing no signs of losing its intensity.
A total of 26 fire tenders battled for the entire day but failed to control the fire at the tyre factory. Water shortage was acutely felt, and when foam was needed, the KMC begun to look elsewhere, for, it had limited stock of fire extinguisher.
The Site Association, bought the foam from its own resources to give it to fire tenders, which suffered from lack of equipment, raising questions as to what will happen in time of crisis. It was simultaneously a big question for National Disaster Management Authority which too seemed to lacked expertise to deal with emergencies.
