In wake of Lahore attack

Khalid Faruqi

As the wounds of the barbaric attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School were still green, another heinous attack has been launched which claimed 70 lives and left more than 300 injured. This time the terrorists have chosen Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park of Lahore where a good number of people, mostly women and children, were present due to the week-end Sunday holiday and the Easter celebrations. Through this attack the terrorists have once again given this message that they are still in the position to rock the nation. There is no doubt that after the launch of Zarb-e-Azb and Karachi-operation under the National Action Plan, marked decrement in the terror-related activities has been observed and that the ongoing targeted operation has seriously damaged the strength of terrorist organizations, but there is still a lot to be done.
Merely, observing mourning days and shutting-off schools will do no good to the country. First of all on urgent basis, the operation conducted against terrorists should be expanded to the whole country. Secondly, it is also important to note that the terrorists have been attacking soft targets. This is another effective strategy to infuse terror into common men. Deploying police or rangers to all these places cannot be a feasible idea. Therefore, the intelligence system of the law enforcement agencies should be enhanced. Last but not the least, the facilitators of terrorists should also be traced and punished. The ongoing operation should not only be continued with all its letter and spirit but also be expanded to the whole country till the elimination of the last terrorist.
