Imran’s out of box solution for Karachi

AHEAD of general election, top leadership of mainstream political parties is making big promises to convert Karachi into a modern South Asian city. Talking to the media persons on Tuesday, Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Imran Khan proposed to solve Karachi’s garbage problem by using it to generate electricity, simultaneously powering a desalination plant for overcoming the water shortage in the city.
According to some estimates, the provincial capital produces over thirteen thousand tonnes of garbage. Had this sort of garbage being produced in any western country, they would have recycled or reused it for some useful purposes. Therefore, the proposal of PTI Chairman who is beaming with confidence to win the next general election, is very practical and must be implemented to address the two chronic problems i.e. garbage and water shortage of the city which is known as the economic hub of the country. Through such out- of-box solutions, we can really build Karachi into a really world class city. A few days back whilst kick starting his electioneering from Maleer, Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Zardari had also stated if his party was voted to power, it will turn seawater into drinkable water. One really appreciates the concerns of Bilawal for water shortage but he must not forget that his party has been in power in Sindh for the last one decade and the question arises as to why it did not implement this plan earlier. Anyway, it is good to see that the mainstream parties in their election campaigns are focusing on Karachi as never before and in the wake of election, we are confident that the promises made with the people will also be fulfilled. As regards the proposal of Imran Khan for garbage fuelled desalination plant is concerned, we understand that such projects should also be executed in other big cities as well. According to experts, burning the waste in waste-to-energy plants not only reduces its volume by 87 percent, but can also harness its embedded energy and put it to good use. Then there is also need to establish plants for recycling of waste and garbage in order to ensure maximum use of resources. Given the population explosion and the depleting resources, this course has become need of the hour and we expect that the political leadership will show commitment towards this end.
