Hundreds of people including PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and other members of the Sharif family attended the funeral of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz — the wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif — at London’s Regent Park mosque on Thursday.
The funeral in London, which was separate from another set to take place in Lahore on Friday, was arranged since the deceased PML-N leader’s sons Hasan and Hussain cannot travel to Pakistan, a PML-N leader earlier told media. Their sister Asma also attended the funeral in London.
PML President Shahbaz Sharif had travelled to London, where he arrived on Wednesday evening, to take Begum Kulsoom’s body back to Lahore for burial.
Sources in the family confirmed that Begum Kulsoom’s casket will be flown to Lahore on PIA flight (PK-758) which was planned to depart from Heathrow Airport at 6:15pm (BST) on Thursday.
The sources said the family had received a death certificate issued by the private hospital where Begum Kulsoom Nawaz breathed her last on Tuesday, and the “out-of-England” letter from the coroner’s court, paving the way for the departure of her body to Lahore. Earlier in the day, Nawaz, who was released from Adiala Jail on parole in order to attend the funeral of his wife in Lahore, paid a visit to Sharif Medical City to oversee arrangements for his deceased wife’s last rites. Begum Kulsoom, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in August last year, passed away in London on Sept 11.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Thursday visited Sharif Medical City in Jati Umra and reviewed the funeral arrangements of his wife Kulsoom. Nawaz expressed satisfaction over the arrangements but asked that the visitors should not face any difficulty.
Nawaz also met political leaders, religious scholars and other personalities who came to Raiwind residence to condole with Nawaz Sharif. Prominent among those were Maulana Fazl ur Rehman, Maulana Tariq Jamil, Mishal Khan, Iqbal Zafar Jhaggra, Ahsan Iqbal and many others including the PML-N legislators,
Nawaz also arrived at the venue where the PML-N activists and other people hailing from different walks of life came to sympathise with him. JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman led the prayers on the occasion. Nawaz left the venue after remaining there for ten minutes.
A PIA flight carrying the casket is scheduled to land at the Lahore Airport on Friday at 6am after which Kulsoom’s second funeral prayer will be held in Jati Umra at 5pm. Later, she will be laid to rest beside the grave of her father-in-law Mian Sharif in Jati Umra.
PML-N workers across the country are holding Quran Khawani at their local offices for eternal peace of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.
Moreover, Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will attend funeral prayer of former First Lady Begum Kulsoom Nawaz at Jati Umra on Friday and meet former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to condolence the death of his wife.
Senior PPP leaders including former prime ministers Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Khursheed Shah, Naveed Qamar, Qamar Zaman Kaira are expected to attend the funeral prayer of Begum Kulsoom. Nawaz Sharif is currently on parole till Saturday. He was released from Adiala Jail after the death of his wife. Kulsoom Nawaz died in London on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.
