HEC awards 59pc scholarships to students of remote areas

The Federal Government under Higher Education Commission (HEC) has awarded 59 per cent national and international scholarships to the needy students, hailing from small towns and rural areas. According to sources here on Sunday, the HEC has awarded around 250,000 scholarships in higher education and most of the beneficiaries were from the backward areas.
These 59 per cent needy scholars belonged to poor families whom monthly income is less than 20,000 and after completion of their studies on scholarships, their monthly income would be minimum Rs 100,000.
HEC has dispelled the rumours that the scholarships were being awarded to the influential people and made it clear that these were provided on merit basis and the poor students.
The sources told APP that to dispel the rumours, HEC organized a study from the third party to check the details and merit in awarding of scholarships.
The third party were given the data of around 251,000 students of PhD, M.Phil and MS who had been awarded scholarships.
The party prepared a comprehensive report after conducting the transparent study and submitted it to the HEC.
According to report details, about 20 per cent scholarships were given to the students of provincial head quarters, important metropolitans, and federal capital.—APP
