HC notices govt on challenging Khurram detention under PSA

Srinagar—The J&K high court on Tuesday issued notice calling for response within two weeks by state government on a petition challenging detention of noted human rights activist Khurram Pervez under Public Safety Act.
A single bench of Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey also issued a notice to government and sought its response by October 7 on separate application against Khurram’s detention in Kotbalwal jail in Jammu, about 300-kilometers from Srinagar, the home district of the rights defender.
He was represented before the court by advocate Pervez Imroz who submitted Khurram has been detained on false and frivolous charges.
“The detention is meant only to keep Khurram out of circulation as he continued to document the human rights abuses,” Imroz submitted and urged the Court to quash the PSA detention order. “The move to detain Khurram is also aimed at sending a message to other rights activists and persons speaking against the current human rights sedition in Kashmir”, Imroz further submitted. In his dossier, the ruling PDP-BJP government has said that Khurram has ‘long history of affiliation’ with secessionists.—KR
