Greater Iqbal Park: Another landmark

ACCOMPANIED by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and others, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday opened Greater Iqbal Park equipped with world-class facilities depicting the cultures of all the four provinces. The facility will not only add beauty to the historic Lahore city but also fascinate both local and foreign tourists given its location in the midst of historic sites and entertainment attractions.
Preserving country’s cultural heritage and glorious past plays a vital role and serves as a source of inspiration and pride for its people. We have a rich cultural heritage and one can easily trace the evolution of civilisation while visiting different parts of the country and enjoying beauty of its landscape. However, it is regrettable that protecting and projecting this rich cultural heritage featuring archaeological sites, stupas, forts, shrines, tombs, monuments etc has never remained a much priority area for our successive governments. It is matter of satisfaction that Shahbaz Sharif led Punjab government is not oblivious to its responsibility towards this end as well. After renovation of the tomb of Hafeez Jalandhari, the poet who composed country’s national anthem, development of Greater Iqbal Park surrounded by historical sites such as Minar-i-Pakistan, Allama Iqbal Mausoleum, Walled city and Lahore Fort is indeed a welcome addition. This will not only provide healthy entertainment to people in the form of artificial lake, musical fountain and other amusements but also bring them back close to the culture reminding them of struggle and sacrifices made by our forefathers for the creation of this great homeland. Whilst Punjab government has done his work, it is now the responsibility of the visitors to contribute to the upkeep of the park by not littering it with wrappers and peels of foodstuff. And as also pointed out by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the protestors should not be allowed to use the facility as a place for sit-in. In the past we have seen public gatherings or protests taking place within the parks which should be strongly abhorred and rejected as such places are only meant for giving relief to the people from their routine life and not to further add woes to their miseries.
