Give respect to women

Arslan Shahzad

In an Islamic society women have an honoured position and, beside their legal and civil rights, they enjoy special respect, love, affection and gentle feelings, which they deserve most. Is she not the compassionate mother, the beloved wife and the affectionate daughter? The best expression of this reality is provided by the following verses from the Glorious Qur’an. “And We have enjoined man concerning his parents – His mother bears him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning takes two years – Be grateful to Me and to your parents. To Me is the eventual coming” I realise how often painful incidents occur with women of our society, despite the fact that they are mostly modestly dressed. How often do we hear men instructing women to dress properly and talk slowly in the presence of men? Why is it that they consider women to be their properties, which can be treated in just about any way they please? It is high time men learn to respect women and not just the ones who are their family. Awareness programmes should be launched by the authorities to make men folks realise how wrong it is to disrespect a woman.
