Rawalpindi—General Zubair Mahmood Hayat assumed the command of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) on Monday.
A formal ceremony in this regard was held at the joint staff headquarters where outgoing Chairman General Rashad Mehmood handed over the command to General Zubair Hayat.
General Hayat, who has become the 17th CJCSC was presented with a guard of honour at the ceremony attended by all chiefs of staff, including outgoing army chief Gen Raheel Sharif and Army Chief designate General Qamar Javed Bajwa
General Zubair Hayat is from the artillery and was serving as Chief of General Staff (CGS) before taking over as CJCSC.
As a three-star general, he was previously posted as director general of the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) and corps commander Bahawalpur. This makes him an ideal choice for the post of CJCSC, who has an almost exclusive jurisdiction over nuclear forces and assets.
During his tenure as a major general, he was general officer commanding Sialkot and later headed the Staff Duties Directorate.
Some of those who worked with him describe him as workaholic and a voracious reader. He is also said to have a very sharp memory.
