Geelani calls for shutdown in south Kashmir today

Srinagar—The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Syed Ali Geelani has called for complete shutdown in Shopian, Islamabad, Kulgam and Pulwama districts, Monday, on the anniversary of rape and murder of two Kashmiri women by Indian troops in Shopian district.
Syed Ali Geelani in a statement issued in Srinagar demanded a probe into the gruesome incident by an international investigation agency. APHC General Secretary Shabbir Ahmad Shah in his statement appealed to the people to observe Monday as women protection day as well. The two victim women, Aasiya and Neelofar, were abducted, molested and subsequently killed by men in uniform in Shopian on Monday.
The family members of the women staged a protest at Press Colony in Srinagar over the authorities’ inaction against the culprits. Another protest sit-in was held by the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons at Pratarp Park in Srinagar against the Indian Army-backed militia’s involvement in enforced disappearances of the civilians. Meanwhile, Syed Ali Geelani while defying restrictions walked out of his residence to participate in the book launch ceremony organized by APHC at main Hyderpora Chowk in Srinagar, Sunday. Syed Ali Geelani is under continued house detention since he returned from New Delhi in April. The function was organized in honor of renowned writer Hassan Zainagiree who authored the book —Kashmir: Aatish-i-Zaer Pa.
Speaking on the occasion, Syed Ali Geelani lashed out at puppet Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for her ‘Pigeon and Cat’ statement and said that the role of Indian armed forces and police was akin to that of cats, which Mehbooba Mufti had talked about, because it was they who selectively killed and tortured Muslims in Kashmir.—KMS
