Free, fair elections

The role of caretakers laid down in the Constitution is to assist ECP in holding free and fair election without any hint of favor or bias for any of the contestants. It is responsibility of caretakers to provide level playing field and ensure media freedom. Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the Father of Nation, very clearly elaborated importance of constitutional rule of law, and stressed that Pakistan was created for self rule by people through free and fair election, with no political role for paid civil or uniformed public office holders. After the death of Quaid-i-Azam, his vision was derailed by intrigues of Sikandar Mirza and Ayub Khan. What followed thereafter is dismemberment of Pakistan, economic plunder, massive tax evasion and a country bled of its resources by corrupt elite who are product of political engineering. Former PM Mian Nawaz Sharif has been disqualified for life by SC. As a citizen of Pakistan, he has a right to demand that due process of law be followed and law must be seen being applied equally to all. The SC of Pakistan called off bluff of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, facing charges of massive corruption and treason for usurping constitution, by giving him an assurance that he will not be arrested on arrival and allowed safe passage to appear before the court. MNS is likely to arrive in Pakistan today (13 July) and may face arrest on arrival. Due process of law must prevail but Caretakers should not be seen acting like Musharraf by imposing Section 144 nor seal Lahore Airport. If law dictates arrest on arrival then MNS must be apprehended only after he has left immigration, without arresting his supporters who came to welcome him.
