Islamabad—In a major development to probe into the allegations recently leveled against Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the Interior Ministry has entrusted the responsibility to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to probe into the accusations leveled by Sarfraz Merchant against the MQM and its top leadership.
Sarfraz Merchant, the former donor of the MQM and close associate of the top party leaders, recently broke his silence about party’s top leadership links with India for the first time since the money laundering probe started in December 2012.
According to sources, the FIA team will hold an in-depth and thorough investigation into charges of money laundering, illegal sale of weapons and the Indian funding to MQM. For this purpose, the team has issued summon to Sarfraz Merchant to appear before it and submit the relevant documentary evidences.
While addressing a news conference on Saturday last, the Interior Minister though had refused to form judicial commission on the charges leveled by former Mayor of Karachi Mustafa Kamal against Altaf Hussain on the pretext that the former Mayor has not presented any documentary proofs. But on the charges of Sarfraz Merchant, he said since Sarfraz Merchant has come up with documentary evidences, these will be thoroughly investigated.
The sources said that the interior ministry has also written a letter to all the security and intelligence agencies to provide any information or evidence if they have any with regards to the inquiry of the FIA.
The sources revealed that the interior ministry will decide about the future course of action following the submission of report by the inquiry team. On the basis of the findings of the FIA team, the ministry will decide as to how and at what level the matter is taken up with the British government.
Altaf Hussain is living in self exile in Britain for over two decades now and facing a number of cases there including the money laundering.
The sources said Pakistan has made significant progress in Imran Farooq murder case but the progress on the side of Britain is quite disappointing. They said the incumbent Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan is committed to take the cases against MQM to logical conclusion by pursuing legal means.
