karachi—Minhaj Qazi who has been accused of murder of Shahid Hamid, who was managing director of Karachi Electric Supply Company (now Karachi Electric) has been identified in court by the widow and son of the slain.
Qazi was arrested by the paramilitary Rangers and kept him in 90-day preventive detention and on completion of that preventive detention period was handed to Police for onward legal process. Police produced the accused in court where the Judge recorded his statement under section 164 of the criminal procedure code (Cr.PC). During identification parade of the accused, Police officers and personnel were removed from court room. The court also recorded statements of widow and son of the slain Hamid.
Umer Shahid son of slain Shahid Hamid in his statement said he was taking breakfast with her mother that he heard some shots. On coming out of home, one in pant and another in Shalwar Qamees were there who shot his father while his slain father, driver and gun man were bleeding. The injured were rushed to hospital where his father succumbed to his injuries.
He said he had already identified Saulat Mirza who has been executed while another killer who was in Shalwar Qamees is Minhaj Qazi who is present in court.
He further stated that later, Dr Farooq Sattar, Waseem Akhtar and Nasreen Jalil warned them of dire consequences in case the case was not withdrawn.
Meanwhile, the accused rejected claims of law enforcement agencies about his affiliation with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) as he said he has never been part of the MQM and that he has never been a friend of Saulat Mirza.
On the identification, he explained that since he is a public figure and uses to appear on televisions regularly, he is widely known among the people and the identification by the widow and son of the slain is only because of that particular aspect of being a known public figure.
He complained to the court that he has been subjected to vehement physical torture and had asked the paramilitary Rangers to shoot him rather than tormenting hi with vehement torture for the crime he did not commit.
He said that he has not been allowed to change his clothes since he was arrested.
