Barring of women from vote
Election Commission of Pakistan says that barring women from casting votes on the polling day will not be accepted.
ECP spokesperson said that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure women’s participation in the election, and if anyone is found posing any sort of undue restriction on women or barring them from voting, the ECP would take strict action against them. Multiple complaints have been received regarding, restricting women to cast vote in different polling stations across the country.
Women were restricted to vote in constituency NA-89 of Kot Momin. In the past as well, women were not allowed to vote in this constituency. Also, no female agents from any political parties were present at the women’s polling booth.
ECPs orders were not being followed in many constituencies of KPK including Peshawar. Restriction on voting of women is being observed in areas of Achini and Haji Banda in Peshawar, KPK, due to which staff of women’s polling station kept waiting for voters.
It is emphasized that special measures may kindly be taken to avoid any such infamous and illegal agreements barring women from casting votes on the polling day. According to commissioner, special measures should be taken to avoid any such infamous and illegal agreements to bar women from casting votes on polling day.
As per explanation to Section 9 (1) of the Act, if the turnout of women voters is less than 10 percent of the total votes polled in a constituency, the commission may presume that the women have been restrained, through an agreement, from casting votes and may declare, polling at one or more polling stations or election in the whole constituency, void. —INP
