ECP directs Nawaz, family to submit reply

Disqualification references

Staff Reporter

Islamabad—The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday directed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and members of his family to issue a response to allegations made by members of the opposition in disqualification references filed against the PM and his family.
A full bench of the ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) retired Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan heard five identical petitions filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Awami Muslim League (AML), Pakistan Awami Tehreek and an individual petitioner, Prof Waheen Kamal.
Four of the petitions target only the prime minister, while the one filed by PPP Secretary General Sardar Latif Khosa seeks the disqualification of PM Sharif and other members of his family, including Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, his son Hamza Shahbaz, prime minister’s son-in-law retired Captain Mohammad Safdar and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, who is the father-in-law of the prime minister’s daughter.
The ECP directed the PM, Shahbaz Sharif, Hamza Shahbaz, Ishaq Dar and Captain Safdar to submit their replies by Sept 6.
