Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani have called upon Parliamentarians and people of Pakistan to observe the Earth Hour today, along with the international community by voluntarily switching off extra lights for one hour between 8:30pm to 9:30pm. In their separate messages on Earth Hour being commemorated world over today, they observed that steps could work towards mitigating the effects of climate change.
The Speaker urged the nation to join hands with other nations on Saturday March, 25, by collectively acting to conserve energy. The wide scale participation by our people will not only impress upon the need for energy conservation but also send a strong message that as a responsible player on the international stage we are conscious of our global and international responsibilities on issues of concern to the mankind, he added.
He highlighted that Pakistan’s Vision 2025 considers Climate Change as one of the top national priorities and provides a sound basis to integrate climate change budgeting into national development planning, added by the Speaker.
The Speaker confirmed that the lights of the Parliament will be switched off to show Parliament’s Commitment of joining hands with the World for energy conservation, combating impacts of climate change and Global Warming.
Chairman Senate observed that people of the world today are divided and segregated on many counts. One thing, however, which we all have in common, is the Planet Earth. Earth Hour Movement is an attempt at protecting the environment and by small steps like these we aim to create a world with a better environment.
The active participation of Senate in the Earth Hour Movement is also important in the context that the Upper House of the Parliament has passed the Pakistan Climate Change Act on March 17, 2017 which will enable the country to tackle pressing climate change issues and channelize global help in implement projects that boost the national climate change resilience, protect lives and livelihoods of the people.
On Saturday, 25th March, 2017, lights at the Parliament House will be switched off from 8 30 to 9 30 pm. The representatives in the Parliament of Pakistan urge the people of Pakistan to support and practically implement the earth hour movement by switching off lights and playing their part in protecting our homes.
