Srinagar—Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, lashed out at the state government for not allowing a group of Ulema (religious preachers) address people at the historic Jamia Masjid here, terming it as ‘ugliest face of aggression.’
Mirwaiz had invited a group of Ulema, who are in Kashmir on the invite of Islamic Fraternity run by Kashmiri youth, for making speeches at the grand mosque in old city.
“Only one speaker, Hussain Yee, was allowed to address the people at the Masjid while rest of the speakers were disallowed and asked to leave Kashmir. Today we have seen ugliest face of intolerance. Our youth were desperately waiting to listen to the speeches of renowned Islamic scholars from Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Kuwait and other countries at Jamia Masjid, but authorities disallowed them,” Mirwaiz said while addressing people at the Jamia Masjid.
He said people had travelled long distances to listen to the scholars that included Dr. Shuiab Sayeed (Peace TV speaker), Sheikh Hamood Ahmad Al Shameeri, Alama Sheikh Salahudin Maqbool from Kuwait, Sheikh ShamimFauzi of Peace TV and Sheikh AshfaqSalafi.
“We strongly condemn the direct interference in religious matters by authorities. I want to know the reasons why these Ulema were disallowed from making religious speeches inside the Masjid,” Mirwaiz said.
He said people won’t remain as mute spectators over the growing intolerance of the ruling dispensation on religious speeches of renowned Ulema. He said the concept of inviting renowned Ulema to Jamia Masjid was to send a message across the world that bloodshed is prohibited in our religion and killing each other in the name of religion is the heinous crime.
“We were waiting to learn and to hear from the Ulema we had invited. In return, they would have taken back our message so that unity among the Muslims across the globe would gain momentum. But ironically, majority of the Ulema we had invited were not granted visa,” he said.
“It is the religious and moral obligation of Islamic scholars across the world to guide people towards right path and also guide the political leaders fighting for justice. It’s the collective responsibility of the Ulema across the globe to find suitable resolution of the issues faced by the Muslim Ummah.”—GK
