Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani said International Day of Democracy reaffirms parliamentarians’ commitment to protect democratic principles and promote this system of governance as the best in the world.
‘The commemoration of this day was a component of the parliamentarians’ efforts to strengthen democracy and their belief in this system as it was government of the people, for the people and by the people’, he remarked.
Senate chairman in his message released here on Friday said the Parliament of Pakistan has observed elections in both of the Houses this year and witnessed successful democratic transition for the third consecutive term.
He said that the oversight role of the parliament was effectively played by the Upper House of the Parliament and committees during the transition period by keeping a strong check on the outgoing government, work of interim setup as well as the election process before, during and after the general elections.
He believed that democracy in the country has many milestones to achieve and the path is getting smoother day by day. Senate chairman felicitated all stakeholders at the national and international stage who have struggled for the principles of democracy. ‘The United Nations General Assembly in 2007 had passed a resolution in which 15 September was adopted as International Day of Democracy, which was being celebrated in democracies around the globe since 2008’, he said.
‘This year Inter-Parliamentary Union has developed the theme of the day, ‘Importance of Parliamentary Oversight’ and termed it a core function of parliaments by maintaining a system of checks and balances on the government in a healthy democracy’, he said.
Meanwhile, Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser has said that democracy contributed powerfully to economic and social progress, international peace and security as well as respect for fundamental rights and freedoms.
He said that democracy was essential to achieving fundamental goals of peace, human rights and development. He said this in his message on the International Democracy Day being commemorated across that world under that auspicious of United Nations on September 15.
According to press release issued here on Friday, the Speaker said that democracy was a universal value based on the freely expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems and their full participation in all aspects of their lives.
In order to achieve this objective, it is incumbent upon the political leadership to shun their political differences and join hands to strengthen the democratic process in the country.
The beauty of democracy is that it finds indigenous solutions to the complex problems bedeviling the polity. It encourages participation of citizens, who are the real stakeholder, in taking charge of their lives.
