Drone attack in Kurram Agency
Peshawar—Political Administration of Mohmand Agency on Monday clamped curfew across the agency for indefinite period to facilitate the search and net operation to apprehend the miscreants specially those involved in the brutal killing of nine men in uniform on Thursday last. “The decision of anti-terror operation has been taken in the backdrop of recent attacks on security forces which left nine cops dead”. The political administration said. At around 2am on Monday morning, security forces ordered residents to stay home indefinitely via loudspeakers, before launching an operation against militants. The authorities also closed down schools and government offices in the agency. Officials said the curfew has been enforced in Haleemzai, Safi and Baizai tehsils, as security forces closed all roads leading to Mohmand Agency, and kicked off a search operation. The curfew will remain clamped from 7a.m to 7p.m during which all education institutes and markets will remain closed.
Meanwhile, the American drones struck a target in Kurram agency reportedly killing a tribal close to Pak-Afghan border on Monday. This was perhaps first drone strike with the lowest causality. Reports said the pilotless American planes fired four missiles at the hideouts of the militants at Shaheedano Dhund area in the Lower Kurram agency but the attack appeared to have remained abortive. While three hideouts were reported destroyed in the fresh hit and vehicles were also damaged, only one person was reported killed whereas some reports said the only victim of the Monday’s attack sustained serious injuries.
“The hideouts were being used to shelter terrorist’s facilitated cross-border movement”, the security source said. While the identity of the man killed in Mondays drone hit could not be ascertained, the predator planes, it appears, have either missed the target or were provided inadequate information about the presence and location of their target. There was no official confirmation of the Monday’s drone attack. The American drones that have been launching missile attacks in the Pakistani tribal belt since 2004 intensified in August 2008, have so far killed more than three thousand people in over 400 hits mostly in North and South Waziristan agencies. Out of those strikes, 33 were conducted in 2008 and 53 in 2009. However, the notorious drones struck 118 times in 2010 and more than two dozen attacks were launched in 2011.
Likewise scores of drone attacks were conducted in the year 2012 killing hundreds of People. In the year 2014 the drones struck for fifteen times in the Pakistani tribal belt. In the year 2015, the ratio of drone attacks, however, remained low. No doubt, a big majority of the drone’s victims remained the innocent tribals as even admitted by the international watch dogs though the US could also manage to hit few of its wanted men. In the meanwhile amid growing resentment among the masses as well as the political forces of the country against the drone hits, all the appeals made by the successive governments in Pakistan to halt the drone strikes always fell on the deaf years of those at the helm of affairs in Washington. While Pakistani administration pleading that the drone strikes were proving extremely counterproductive against the so called war on terror, the missile hits only added to the hatred of Pakistani people against America.
