CPEC — Gen Raheel reflects nation’s resolve

CHIEF of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Friday vowed the security forces were ready to pay any price to turn the long-cherished dream of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into reality. During his visit to the headquarters of the newly created security division for CPEC, he said they were totally aware of the campaign against the mega project and that the Army would provide security to the game changer project as well as personnel associated with it.
What the COAS has said is very encouraging as it is not just resolve of our armed forces but also the entire nation to see accomplishment of this project as envisaged by Pakistan and China. It is an opportunity in centuries and no saner elements would want to create any hurdle in the way of its smooth implementation. However, it is quite obvious that some foreign powers have started hatching conspiracies against the project because of its strategic importance and unfortunately some local elements have also become knowingly or unknowingly tools in the hands of forces antagonistic to CPEC. This is evident by the fact that these elements are giving new twists to the issues involved on every other day and are not willing to reconcile with the idea of allowing the projects under the umbrella of CPEC to take concrete shape. Ironically, the focus of those involved in anti-CPEC propaganda campaign is Punjab and they are trying their best to deprive the province of any benefit from it. This is despite the fact that projects under the CPEC are spread all over the country. They, however, want concentration of some facilities like power plants, water reservoirs and industrial estates in a particular area to create monopolies that are already being used as blackmailing tools. All this clearly shows that opposition by a handful of elements is based not on merit and fair play but an opposition to the overall progress and development of the country. Under these circumstances, while welcoming formation of the special security division for CPEC, we would urge General Raheel Shaif and those concerned in Army and intelligence agencies to keep a vigilant eye so that these elements do not succeed in causing any inconvenience to the project or those associated with its execution.
