Court orders PIO to first approach relevant forums

Grievances against TV anchors

Staff Reporter

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday turned down a petition by the Principal Information Officer (PIO) who is seeking action against some television anchors for maligning and bracketing him with those responsible for allegedly leaking information of a high level meeting to a local English newspaper’s reporter.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani dismissed the petition as non-maintainable after it emerged that the petitioner had not approached the relevant forums before filing the petition in the IHC. A day earlier, PIO Rao Tehsin had approached the court for action against respondents who according to him falsely named him among those responsible for leaks.
Tehsin had cited Secretary Ministry of Interior, Chairman of the Inquiry Committee constituted to probe into the press leaks, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) through Chairman, Information Secretary and three TV hosts, namely Kamran Khan, Jasmine Manzoor and Salman Mirza as respondents.
The petitioner terming all such reports as “propaganda statements” made it clear that the committee findings are yet to be shared and there is no such thing as his being one of the culprits, etc.
